Oír correctamente mantiene sano el cerebro.

Las habilidades mentales sobre todo en las áreas de la atención y la abstracción, disminuyen más rápido en quienes sufren algún grado de sordera y no ponen remedio como por ejemplo, uso de audífonos.

La causa sigue siendo desconocida pero se considera que el aislamiento social en que suelen caer estas personas sería uno de los factores que favorece la pérdida de estas habilidades mentales.
Investigadores del Centro de Salud y Envejecimiento de la Universidad Johns Hopkins, señalan también que el esfuerzo por tratar de escuchar mejor hace que se pierda parte de la energía que ocupa el cerebro en sus funciones de pensamiento y memoria.

En la investigación se vio que habilidades como la atención y la abstracción se veían alteradas en quienes afrontaban problemas auditivos sin tratamiento. En ellos, la pérdida de habilidades cognitivas se producía hasta 40% más rápido que en una persona con audición normal.

A eso hay que agregar que un trastorno auditivo aumenta el riesgo de caídas, accidentes y depresión.
